Life was one bright and full of possibilities.  I waited impatiently for the moment that I would be taken up, called to the higher purpose that so many of my kind had been called to before me.  Of course, at that time, I didn't know what that purpose was, though I don't believe any of us knew.  How could we have imagined the torture that awaited us?
I still remember how I felt when I got chosen:  the rush of being lifted up by unseen forces to fulfil my unknown destiny; the joy of having been chosen at last.  It was a beautiful feeling, pure white-hot bliss.  Then things began to go horribly wrong.
I was stuffed into a dark dank hole that stank of putrid refuse and reeked of bacteria and dust congealed so thick, it coated every inch of the hole.  Then, to my horror and disgust, I was roughly shaken about and rammed against the walls of the hole.  The conglomerate of filth and slime covered my body until there was no particle of me that was not infused with the rancid stench and sticky substance. I was sure I was screaming, but the hole sucked up every noise.
Almost as quickly as it had started, the heinous spectacle was over and I was back in the light of day, but the humiliation did not stop there.  I felt the force that had held me, release me and I went flying through the air until I landed in a bin.  I sat there dazed for a long time; unable to believe the dark turn my life had taken.
I am still sitting here, though no longer dazed.  Many things lie under me and many more lie on top of me.  We are all different shapes and sized, but we all have something in common:  we have all been beaten and broken by life's unforeseeable and unforgiving forces.
